$3,625 raised on International Women’s Day

Thanks to everyone who came out to eat at Bandidas and support the fundraising effort on International Women’s Day! On March 8th, we donated 100% of our profits to various local and national organizations which serve women (we use an inclusive definition of the term “women”). We asked our customers and community to vote for how they’d like to see the funds distributed. Based on these votes, the money will distributed as such:

WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre  -  $580
DEWC (Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre)  -  $653
Safeteen  -  $290
Sheway (Pregnancy Outreach Program)  -  $544
Equal Voice  -  $254
CCMW (Canadian Council of Muslim Women  -  $326
NWAC (Native Women’s Association of Canada)  -  $906
Egale  -  $290

Thank you also to the lovely women who were able to come out from each organization: Anita from Safeteen, Jenna from DEWC, and Tazul from CCMW. And thanks to Jagmeet Singh and the local NDP team for coming out to support the fundraiser.

We have our lovely event sponsors, Hoyne Brewing Company, Strange Fellows Brewing, and Salt Spring Coffee to thank for donating a significant amount of their fine products to the fundraiser, which increased our profits for the day and ultimately the amount of money we could donate. Cheers to these three gems!

One of the most beautiful elements of the day was the art show that came together from 6 Vancouver artists. Much of the art was created for this day in particular, and all of it responds to feminist themes in both visually and conceptually diverse ways. Thank you to Maely Doyon-Sargent, Steph Gwynne, Meghan West, Lenslie Vargas, Laurence Patenaude, and Shoko Sonoda for lending us your gorgeous works for our walls. Please come in any time before April 21st to view the collection, and consider leaving with one of these gorgeous works (100% of proceeds go to the artists themselves). Read more about each artist and the IWD collection of art here.

Steph Gwynne created our event logo, which we adore. Framed prints are for sale for $25 throughout the month, and 100% of the proceeds from these prints will continue to be donated to NWAC, the top voted organizations. Thank you, Steph, for your generosity.

This is our 4th event of this size (see our Teacher Strike, Fireweed & Earth Day events), and we continue to be floored by the support of our customers, employees, and business partners. We’re so grateful to all who showed up at the restaurant on March 8th, and to all who show up every day. It’s because of you that we’re able to realize our dream of being a business that can donate significantly to causes our community cares about.

Join us again on April 22nd, for our 2nd annual Earth Day fundraiser for Raven Trust. Details to come.

Thank you to our Event Sponsors!
